Hydroquinone is a prescriptive topical cream. It is effective only at the prescriptive strength of 4%. Don’t be fooled by non-prescriptive strength hydroquinone that is offered by over-the-counter cosmetic brands. They are non-effective.
Prescriptive strength Hydroquinone is topically applied to correct or lighten conditions of hyperpigmentation such as freckles, age spots, sun spots, melasma, or chloasma (darkened skin caused by hormonal changes). Therefore, Hydroquinone can also be used for treatment of skin discoloration resulting from the use of oral contraceptives, pregnancy, and hormone replacement therapy.
